Howdy friends! Today, we’re going off the rails in the best way possible. We’ve had some folks ask us about this one so let’s just jump right in….

That’s right — we’re talking about the refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad — the wildest ride in the wilderness is currently a little, shall we say, under the weather! Big Thunder Mountain officially started refurbishment back on January 6, 2025 and here’s what we know so far:

• The ride will be offline for a full year, at least.
• Disney hasn’t confirmed an exact reopening date yet, but said it will reopen with a little bit of new magic in 2026.
• This is part of Disney’s ongoing effort to refresh and maintain iconic attractions as the park gears up for major and super exciting expansions.

Refurbishments are nothing new — Big Thunder’s seen a few over the years. But what’s different this time? As of now, Disney has kept the details hush-hush, but here are a few educated guesses based on previous refurbishments at Disneyland Paris and Disneyland in California:

1. Enhanced Special Effects – We expect upgraded dynamite scenes, improved lighting, and maybe even projection effects during the iconic final lift hill — just like the explosive scene in Paris!
2. Smoother Ride Experience – New track work could mean a smoother, more comfortable ride without losing that classic rickety feel we all know and love, of course.
3. Updated Theming and Scenery – Some speculation suggests Disney might refresh the queue and surrounding landscape to better tie into Frontierland or the upcoming expansion themes.
4. Safety and Accessibility Upgrades – This is a big one. Enhanced accessibility, improved evacuation routes, and updated ride controls are often a key part of these behind-the-scenes upgrades.
